Patient(s) Care

Medicine always holds a place of pride as a noble profession and good doctors are looked up to with reverence and regard. I met Dr. Uma Ram, one of the leading gynecologists and obstetricians in the city of Chennai, for whom pursuing medicine happened very naturally, as she was born in a family of doctors.

She has been practising since 1994 and has established herself as a skilled professional, for lot of women trust her wholeheartedly during confinement and delivery.

Dr. Uma said “I joined medicine without thinking too much about it. Coming from a family of many doctors, when I got into medical college, there was no looking back. I got a lot of guidance during my medical college days from people in my family. I was surgically inclined and resorted to gynecology and obstetrics after I did my internship in EV Kalyani nursing home. I underwent my Post graduation in gynecology and took up the exam from Royal College, UK in the year 1999. Since that demanded a lot of different skills, and there was little guidance here, a few of us who had gone through the process got together and started coaching post graduation medical students to take up that exam. Teaching also helps me to keep myself updated with the latest in the world of medicine.”

Dr. Uma clarified that practising medicine was very different today from the days of her previous generation. Educated people have a lot of access to medical information. It has its advantages and disadvantages. The good side was that patients came with an awareness of what their health hazards could be and why a particular course of treatment should be taken. She said it also meant giving them a lot of explanation. On the other hand, information was also sometimes misinterpreted leading to a lot of anxiety and worry.

Uma said “This profession is highly demanding and time is totally not in our control. We are woken up at odd times of the night to attend women in labour pain. But when a child is delivered, the information is received by the family with such joy and happiness which makes all our efforts worthwhile.  I have a very supportive husband and understanding family so I am able to enjoy my work thoroughly, leading to a very satisfactory work life”.

I asked her what she would attribute her success to, she smiled, “You should ask my clients that, but from my end I feel as a doctor establishing a rapport with the patient is important. Then, if you are honest and genuine they are able to understand and respond accordingly”.

Talking about her clinic, she said “Here in Seethapathy clinic, my father Dr. N S Murali, my brother Dr. Sandeep, my aunt Dr. Sarojini Raman, Dr. Jayashree and Dr. Shobana practise.  Exercise during pregnancy has always been emphasised by us but now there is a good response as we have Rekha Sudarsan who approached us and is conducting structured exercise programs and breathing techniques for women who are pregnant”.

Dr. Uma Ram is passionate about music and attends concerts when work permits her to. She loves reading fiction and non-fiction. A woman who has zest for life, who is very organised, not hassled by her crazy schedules, retains the human touch in her to give her best attention and care to each and every patient and they vouch for her genuineness in her care for them.
