Give to Live

A spiritual master lived the simplest kind of life in a little hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening, while he was away, a thief sneaked into the hut only to find there was nothing in it to steal. The Master returned and found him. "You have come a long way to visit me," he told the prowler, "and you should not return empty handed. Please take my clothes as a gift." The thief was bewildered, but he took the clothes and ran away. The Master sat naked, watching the moon. "Poor fellow," he mused,” I wish I could give him this beautiful moon."

It’s a funny thing with life, that what we hold on to dearly, burdens us more than what our life would be without it in the first place. It’s even more interesting to observe that the burden of holding something and the eventual pain in the fear of losing it is self-created. The greatest of joy is in sharing and giving and in that alone lays the quintessence of life.

Life and its all pervading energy that flows in this great cosmic design are never stagnant but eternally flowing.  We human beings are one of life’s many manifestations and if we act in accordance to its primary nature to ‘flow’, then life will reveal its secrets of bliss and joy beyond the boundaries of bondage and pain.

The path to flow with life, for us human beings, is in learning to give and rise over bondage. Religions across the globe have designed many of its rituals and social practices with the act of giving. To share and give are an integral part of all religious practices, essentially built-in to enable and guide its clan towards liberation and freedom in the longer run. Liberation from bondage opens the doors of life to live in the present.  Bondage leads man to live in the past or the unknown future, missing out on the present. The nature to even part with his last possession, is what enabled the master to see the beautiful moon in its present glory.  The bliss of life and its joy is in living life at present. So learn to give, so that you can live.
