Why is the mind so powerful in defining what we do in our lives? For us to understand the same we need to understand how the mind works and how it shapes our emotions, intelligence, value system and characteristics as a whole. We also need to understand what feeds our mind for it to work in the first place. Human beings feed our minds through our five senses – seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling. These senses constantly contribute to what our mind entertains as thoughts to be processed. Repeated experiences of these senses strengthen the active thoughts of the same in our minds and what gets actively processed in our minds then gets stored in our subconscious minds as knowledge and relevant emotional experiences, which in turn programs our emotional and intellectual knowhow. This in a way makes our mind the conduit to formulate our emotional, intellectual capabilities and also the basis of our values and characteristics.
Most of what we entertain in our minds is given externally from the world in our growing years. Today when we turn back on life to see that we have progressed this far in our personal and professional lives we are bound to note that it was largely based on what we have entertained in our thoughts through our senses and engagement with the world and people around us. By nature human mind gets led by its sensual needs, but these need not necessarily be the ideals to be indulged in. This does not mean we are victims or beneficiaries of the external world and our sensual needs, all we need is to exercise discretion in entertaining the ideal thoughts in our minds. We have the power to choose what to entertain in our minds and what not to entertain through our independent-will or in simple terms, we can choose what gets into our mind. When we make this choice, we formulate the building blocks for our perceptions, reactions and actions which define the quality of our lives and also contribute to the quantity of our livelihoods. The power to choose what gets into our mind is at our disposal from the multi-various things that the world has to offer to us. That in time will define the quality of our intelligence and emotions which will shape our characteristics and value system, with which when we act in the world outside will bring out the relevant quality in the way we live our lives and the output that we get will also yield the relevant benefits.
In a nutshell what it means is – if we take care of what goes into our minds, then what goes out of ourselves will automatically enhance what we get out of our lives. The power of human mind is in being able to automatically program our abilities as a human being, but the choice to feed the mind with the ideals is in our discretion and unless we exercise that the power of the human mind will be a victim of the world around us.
No wonder, an age old Japanese saying, “mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru” which translates to “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” has its powerful relevance to life.
