Baby Care

In the olden days there used to be an old lady in every house to give advice when a baby is born in the family on how the baby should be brought up.  Some tips from the home made medicines given by these old women to take care of the child, helps in ensuring that the child is relaxed and happy.

Some times infants cry continuously. If it is due to constipation, a few kismis (dry grapes) can be boiled in water and half a spoon of the warm juice can be given to the child.  Rubbing both our hands against each other, heat can be generated and one hand can be placed on the navel. A little caster oil can also be rubbed around the navel. Any of these will help in releasing the stools.

If the child cries due to accumulation of gas in the stomach, ‘Vasambu’ (available in country drug shops) is rubbed with water in any hard surface, the paste can be collected, warmed, cooled and applied again around the navel. It will release the gas at once and the baby will relax.

If the child cries due to the nose being blocked, take a little coconut oil in a spoon, add very little camphor, dissolve and warm it, cool it and apply this gently in the throat and chest. The child will inhale this and the nose block will be released and help the child to sleep well.

In case of cold, you can take ‘Red wood’ (Marapachi doll), rub this with mother’s milk on a stone, slightly warm it. After cooling it, apply this solution on the forehead and nose. This process can also be done with turmeric (virali manjal, long in shape). Both will absorb the cold from inside and relieve the child.

Taking care of minor discomforts for a child goes a long way in helping the child in remaining cheerful and playful.
